Kerrie Lavery, 26, wins £1 million after losing her leg in a hit-and-run crash in Clydebank
Clydebank: A young mum lost her leg in a hit-and-run. Kerrie Lavery, 26, was hit by Thomas Granger, 47, driving his BMW at 81mph. This was more than double the speed limit.
The accident happened on October 2, 2021, while Kerrie and her friend were walking home from a charity event. Sadly, her right leg was amputated due to the injuries.
Granger didn’t stop after hitting them. He drove away but later returned to the scene. At first, Kerrie’s group thought he was a good Samaritan. When they realized he was the driver, he sped off again.
Police caught Granger later. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison and banned from driving for seven years. He was found guilty of causing serious injury and failing to stop.
Kerrie filed a compensation claim in September last year. She wanted to ensure she could get medical treatment for life. Her lawyers confirmed the claim has been settled successfully.
After the court action, Kerrie said Granger needed to be held accountable. She acknowledged the crash changed her life but tried to stay positive. She believes life-changing events don’t have to end your life.
Her friend Alanah, who was also injured, expressed pride in Kerrie’s recovery. She said Kerrie is inspirational and has shown great strength.
Chris Stewart from Digby Brown Solicitors said Kerrie’s situation was tragic. He confirmed the settlement means Kerrie can access the best medical care and secure her financial future.
Now, Kerrie and her family can look forward to a brighter future.
