Yeovil’s new amphitheatre could spark a vibrant Christmas market scene, rivaling Bath.
Yeovil: The town might soon have a Christmas market to rival Bath. This is thanks to the new amphitheatre at The Triangle. Yeovil MP Adam Dance opened it recently, creating a lively space for events.
This amphitheatre is part of the Yeovil Refresh project. This project will also see the old Glovers Walk shopping centre replaced. First, there will be a temporary community space, followed by a mixed-use development.
Mr. Dance, who also represents South Petherton and Islemoor, wants a new green space in the town center. This would allow for Christmas markets and other events throughout the year.
He expressed excitement about the new facility. He looks forward to returning in spring when the large screen and fountains will be ready.
Mr. Dance reminisced about the vibrant market from his childhood. He noted how the area had declined over the years. Now, he believes the amphitheatre gives the community a purpose and a place to gather.
The Yeovil Refresh project cost £24 million, with significant funding from the government. The project aims to improve public spaces and residential areas in the town center.
There have been delays in the project due to the pandemic and contractor issues. Mr. Dance understands the challenges local businesses face and is committed to advocating for Yeovil’s recovery.
He mentioned that Somerset Council owns only a few shops in town. Recent cuts to business rate relief could hurt local businesses. Mr. Dance is working to change this situation.
He plans to hold a forum soon, inviting all Yeovil businesses to share their views. He also aims to find a long-term solution for the vacant cattle market site near Yeovil Hospital.
Demolition of the Glovers Walk shopping center will begin in spring. Mr. Dance believes turning it into a public green space will attract more events and visitors.
He emphasized the need to revitalize the town and reduce antisocial behavior. A vibrant town will benefit all residents, and he envisions pop-up markets, especially during Christmas.
Once the amphitheatre is operational, it will enhance the town’s appeal. Mr. Dance hopes it will create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
Councillor Richard Wilkins highlighted the importance of revitalizing Yeovil. He looks forward to community events at the amphitheatre, emphasizing the council’s role in supporting local initiatives.
Yeovil has an engaged community, as seen in their efforts to save local venues. This enthusiasm will help bring vibrancy back to the area.
