Llay Miners Welfare FC reveals a vibrant new kit honoring Ryan Reynolds’ iconic characters
This club plays in the second tier of Welsh football and is just a short drive from Wrexham AFC, the team Reynolds co-owns. Jackman even popped by Wrexham in August 2023 to catch a game, which is pretty neat. The Deadpool and Wolverine movie made a huge splash, raking in over a billion dollars worldwide since its release last July.
Wrexham’s own Paul Mullin even made a fun cameo as a Welsh version of Deadpool. The new Wolverine-themed kit will make its debut during a derby match against Gresford Athletic on January 11. Plus, the club plans to give away some Wolverine-themed scarves soon. A portion of the kit sales will support the Wrexham Miners Project charity, which is a great cause.
Kieron Fox, the chairman of Llay Miners Welfare FC, expressed how important mining and football are to Wrexham. He’s excited about the collaboration with Hotel Wrexham and the charity to keep the area’s history alive. Reynolds and co-owner Rob McElhenney are also backing the Wrexham Miners Project, each pledging £26,200 to help preserve the mining heritage.
This effort is part of a larger £250,000 fundraising campaign led by Wrexham’s executive director, who’s gearing up for the 2025 Manchester Marathon to raise even more funds. Peter Schriewersmann from Hotel Wrexham emphasized the importance of supporting local causes and getting involved in the community’s rich history.
If you’re in Wrexham, you can also check out a cool stained-glass window tribute to Deadpool and Wolverine at the Turf pub, which became famous from the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. It’s a great way to celebrate the local culture and the film’s legacy.
