A woman thought she had miscarried but unexpectedly gave birth to twins, who sadly did not survive due to extreme prematurity
But surprise! A couple of months later, she gave birth to twin girls at home, just hours after leaving the hospital. Sadly, they were born way too early, around 19 to 21 weeks, and didn’t make it.
An inquest revealed that Omoniyi and her husband had traveled to Nigeria for the embryo transfer because they wanted Afro-Caribbean donors. After getting positive pregnancy tests, they were over the moon.
But when they went for a scan, the doctor couldn’t find anything. Omoniyi was devastated and didn’t even go to a follow-up appointment. She thought she had miscarried.
Weeks later, she had some symptoms but still believed she had lost the baby. Then, she ended up in the hospital with pain and fever. The doctor didn’t realize she was pregnant and sent her home.
Things took a turn when she started feeling worse at home. An ambulance was called, and she ended up giving birth to the twins. Unfortunately, they didn’t survive due to extreme prematurity.
The coroner concluded that even if she hadn’t been discharged, the outcome would have likely been the same. It’s just a tragic situation all around.
