Work to reopen a key route in Woking is progressing well after storm damage
Woking: A major road in the town centre is on track to reopen by mid-January. It’s been closed since early December, right during the busy holiday season.
The A320 Victoria Way was shut down after Storm Darragh caused some serious damage to the Hilton Hotel. Panels got dislodged, and it was a safety concern. Contractors are saying they expect to finish repairs by mid-January.
A spokesperson from Sir Robert McAlpine, the company handling the repairs, mentioned that everything is going according to plan. They really appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.
Surrey County Council has also mentioned that some highway improvements should wrap up by January 10. But they’re not sure if that’s when the road will actually reopen, as more work might be needed.
This closure has been a real hassle for drivers and pedestrians since it’s one of Woking’s main routes. And, of course, it’s even more frustrating because it happened during the busiest time of the year.
Interestingly, Victoria Way had to close back in November too, thanks to similar issues from Storm Bert. Loose panels were spotted, and the police had to step in to shut the road for safety.
Councillor Ann-Marie Barker expressed her disappointment over the situation, especially since the Hilton has caused delays in the past. She emphasized that while safety is crucial, the ongoing closures are a real inconvenience for everyone in Woking.
The Hilton hotel finally opened in November 2024 after several delays. It’s a big place with 189 rooms, but it’s already had its share of issues, including that earlier closure back in October 2021.
