Wetherspoons has introduced a controversial rule banning drinking at the bar, leaving many customers upset and voicing their frustrations.
Rayleigh: So, Wetherspoons has stirred up quite the fuss lately. They’ve decided to ban folks from drinking at the bar, and let me tell you, people are not happy about it.
Some pubs, like the Roebuck in Essex, have put up signs saying, “No drinking at the bar.” They want customers to move away once they get their drinks. Sounds a bit strict, right?
One local guy, Alf, who’s 71, shared his thoughts. He used to enjoy standing at the bar, chatting with the staff and other regulars. But now, he’s told to move. He gets why they’re doing it, but it’s just not the same.
This rule comes after they started making people queue at the bar instead of the usual free-for-all. It’s a big change, and not everyone is on board.
The pub’s manager defended the new rule, saying it’s not about health and safety but more about keeping things organized, especially when it gets busy. They had 500 people there at Christmas, so I guess they need some order.
When asked about the complaints, the manager said they have a zero-tolerance policy for any abuse. Fair enough, right?
But not everyone is upset. Micky, a 64-year-old scaffolder, thinks the new system might actually help. He pointed out that it can get confusing when people just stand around at the bar. It’s a food place now, and things have changed.
So, while some folks are grumbling, others see the logic behind it. Change is tough, but maybe it’s for the best?
