A community group in West Belfast is urging local authorities to adopt a hazardous alleyway for improved safety and reduced anti-social behavior
Belfast: A community group in West Belfast is on a mission. They want to get a risky alleyway officially adopted to make it safer for everyone. The Beechmount Residents Collective is leading the charge.
They’re reaching out to the Department for Infrastructure and Belfast City Council. The alleyway in question runs between Beechmount Grove and Beechmount Crescent. Residents say it’s a real hazard, with uneven paving that has caused injuries.
It’s not just about safety, though. This alley has turned into a dumping ground for rubbish and a spot for all sorts of anti-social behavior. Sean Doherty from the group shared that locals have been dealing with these issues for at least four years.
He mentioned that every time residents ask for help, they’re told it’s not anyone’s responsibility since the alley isn’t officially adopted. That’s frustrating, right?
Sean pointed out that the uneven paving is a health and safety risk, especially for kids. Plus, it could even put council workers at risk when they come to collect bins.
There’s also been a lot of anti-community activity happening there, and it won’t get better until the alley is officially adopted. The community is fed up and is rallying together to push for change.
They’re planning to be back in the area soon to gather more support. If you want to help out, you can reach them at BRCbeechmount@outlook.com.
