Calls are growing for the Welsh Government to finalize plans for Cardiff Parkway by early 2025 to boost local jobs and infrastructure
Cardiff: The Welsh Government is under pressure to make a call on the Cardiff Parkway project. This new train station and business park could really change the game for the area.
Cardiff Council gave the green light back in April 2022, but then the Welsh Government stepped in to take a closer look. They usually do this for big projects that could have a national impact.
Both Labour and Conservative councillors are on the same page, urging the Welsh Government to speed things up. They want a decision before the next council meeting on January 30, 2025. It’s a big deal for the local economy.
Cllr Bernie Bowen-Thomson, a Labour councillor, emphasized that this development could create thousands of jobs in east Cardiff. She’s really pushing for it to happen soon.
A spokesperson for the Welsh Government mentioned that they’re taking their time to consider all the evidence. They want to make sure they get it right, but they also said a decision would come as soon as possible.
The plans have been reviewed at two hearings, and there are some concerns about how the development might affect local wildlife. Some folks are worried about building on land that’s important for biodiversity.
At one of the hearings, Dr. Diana Callaghan from Friends of the Gwent Levels raised questions about the need for office space in that area. Another attendee, Julia Barrell from Cardiff Civic Society, liked the idea of a train station but was skeptical about the business park.
To offset any environmental impact, Cardiff Parkway Developments Ltd has suggested some compensation land. The Welsh Government had initially aimed for a decision by April 26, 2024, but things have changed since then.
With a new First Minister in place, Eluned Morgan confirmed she would be the one making the final call on this project.
At a recent council meeting, Cllr Adrian Robson criticized the Welsh Government for delaying the decision. He pointed out that the First Minister is responsible for the hold-up.
Cllr Chris Lay expressed frustration, saying it’s unfair that the station hasn’t been built yet. He believes the community deserves better transport options and business opportunities.
Rolls-Royce is even eyeing the site for one of its hubs, which could be a big win for the area.
Another Trowbridge councillor, Cllr Michael Michael, argued that the case for Cardiff Parkway is strong and should have been addressed long ago. He’s hopeful about the First Minister’s involvement in the decision-making process.
While Liberal Democrats supported the motion for a decision, they wanted improvements to bus transport first. Their amendment didn’t pass, but the Conservatives’ push for a January 2025 decision did.
A Welsh Government spokesperson reiterated that the First Minister will make the final decision, emphasizing the need for thorough consideration of all evidence before setting any timelines.
They also highlighted that the government has been proactive in speeding up planning decisions, so a verdict on Cardiff Parkway should come soon.
