Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council celebrates a successful breastfeeding campaign with a festive event, marking a significant rise in breastfeeding rates.
Ebbw Vale: A Welsh council is buzzing with excitement over its breastfeeding campaign. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council just wrapped up the first year of its ‘Get Blaenau Gwent Breastfeeding’ initiative.
They held a special Christmas celebration on December 2, 2024, at the General Offices. Over 80 mothers and their little ones came together to celebrate their breastfeeding journeys.
It was a fun day filled with a festive buffet, tea, coffee, and even a visit from Santa! The moms got to enjoy some playtime and snap photos, making it a memorable occasion.
Each mother received a certificate and a special breastfeeding award pin to honor their achievements. One mom shared how lovely it was to connect with others and enjoy a hot coffee together.
The event really showcased the amazing progress in breastfeeding rates in Blaenau Gwent this year. Since launching the campaign, rates jumped from 40% in January to an impressive 60% by August!
Ceri Bird, the service manager for children’s services, credited the rise to the council’s dedication and partnerships with the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and celebrity breastfeeding advocate Ferne McCann.
