Newport City Council is considering reverting speed limits on 16 roads after a public consultation revealed strong local opinions.
Newport: The city council is thinking about changing the speed limit on 16 roads from 20mph back to 30mph. This comes after a public consultation that got over 3,500 responses. Residents suggested 335 different roads for possible changes.
But here’s the catch: most of those roads didn’t meet the strict rules set by the Welsh Government for exemptions. The switch to a 20mph default speed limit in September 2023 stirred up quite a bit of debate. With Ken Skates now the transport secretary, a new public consultation was launched to see which roads folks wanted to go back to 30mph.
Now, Newport City Council is gearing up to issue a Traffic Regulation Order for those 16 roads. This will let the public weigh in again on the proposed changes. They even got £94,100 to help with this process.
Cabinet members are likely to give the green light for the speed limit increase “in principle” at a meeting later this month. Some of the roads on the list include parts of Caerphilly Road, Bassaleg Road, and Duffryn Drive, among others.
The decision to lower the default speed limit to 20mph last year was controversial, and with the new leadership, there’s a fresh chance for residents to voice their opinions on the speed limits they want to see.
