Wales fly-half Sam Costelow’s injury raises concerns ahead of Six Nations squad announcement, leaving Gatland in a tough spot
Cardiff: So, it looks like Warren Gatland is in a bit of a pickle. Just days before he’s set to announce the Six Nations squad, Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow got hurt during a match against Gloucester. Ouch!
Costelow had to leave the game early, clutching his shoulder. He was replaced by Ioan Nicholas just minutes in. This is a bummer because he’s been a regular for Wales lately and was pretty much a lock for the squad.
Now, on his 24th birthday, he was supposed to be a key player in a young backline, but that didn’t last long. As he waits to find out how bad the injury is, Gatland is probably feeling the pressure too.
To make matters worse, Gareth Anscombe was also missing from the game due to a knee issue. With both fly-halves potentially out, Gatland might have to scramble to find replacements.
Dan Edwards from the Ospreys could be a good option since he’s been playing well this season. He was even invited to train with Wales before but got injured. Then there’s Jarrod Evans from Harlequins, who’s also on the radar.
Gatland’s got a tough job ahead, especially after a winless 2024. The Welsh Rugby Union is expecting better results, and they’ll be keeping a close eye on how things go in the Six Nations.
