Walsall Council has spent £15,000 to remove waste from Dalkeith Street after property owners ignored legal notices
Walsall: So, Walsall Council just had to step in and clean up a huge mess on Dalkeith Street. They removed nine tonnes of waste after the property owners didn’t bother responding to legal notices. Can you believe it? Taxpayers are now footing a £15,000 bill since April 2022 for this cleanup.
Back in November 2024, the council issued three Community Protection Notices to a property that used to be A1 Furniture. It was a textiles and factory workshop, but now it’s just a dumping ground. One notice went to AL11 Properties Ltd, and the other two were sent to individuals listed as directors of the company.
These notices told them to get rid of all the rubbish, including old appliances and anything that could attract pests. Ignoring these notices can lead to prosecution, which is pretty serious stuff.
Walsall Council said they had no choice but to act when the notices were ignored. On January 8, their Street Cleansing team went in for a big cleanup. They even had to close the road while they filled up five crane lorries with all that junk.
Councillor Garry Perry, the council leader, expressed his disappointment. He mentioned that they’ve put a lot of effort into tackling fly-tipping on Dalkeith Street. It’s frustrating that they had to take such drastic measures, but they had to do something when the legal notices were ignored.
He also mentioned that they plan to take legal action against those responsible, hoping to make them pay for the cleanup. It’s a clear message: fly-tippers won’t get away with it in Walsall. They’re serious about punishing those who mess up the community.
Walsall Council even offers a £500 reward for tips leading to prosecutions for fly-tipping. If you have any info, you can send it to flytipping@walsall.gov.uk. They’re looking for photos, statements, or any evidence to help tackle this issue.
