Cardiff: Teachers in Wales are really worried about how energy drinks are affecting kids. They say these drinks are causing problems with mood, focus, and behavior in the classroom. The Welsh Government is looking into banning the sale of these drinks to anyone under 16.

They’re also thinking about limiting free refills of sugary drinks in restaurants and changing how unhealthy foods are marketed. The Children’s Commissioner asked kids and teachers for their thoughts, and the feedback is now with the Welsh Government.

Many teachers noted that energy drinks are a big distraction. One teacher mentioned that kids get hooked on them and struggle to concentrate. Another called it a “huge issue” that impacts how kids act every day.

Interestingly, over 60% of kids who took part in the survey backed the idea of banning energy drinks for those under 16. They pointed out that a lot of their peers are drinking these high-caffeine, sugary drinks.

When asked about the health risks, many kids mentioned concerns like heart problems. They also noticed how the placement of unhealthy foods in stores influences their choices, especially when they’re near the checkout.

About 70% of kids said deals like buy one get one free make them want to grab unhealthy snacks. They feel like they’re missing out if they don’t take advantage of those offers.

However, opinions were mixed on limiting free refills of sugary drinks. While some kids supported it, many were worried about the cost of eating out. One kid said it’s already pricey, and paying for refills would just make it worse.

Rocio Cifuentes, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, noted that kids seem to understand the health risks of energy drinks. She emphasized the need to consider their views as these proposals move forward.

She also pointed out that kids are aware of financial pressures and how these changes could affect their families. It’s clear that many kids recognize the negative health impacts of sugary drinks, and she supports efforts to create healthier food environments.
