Tenby: Every year, folks in Wales take a chilly plunge to kick off the new year. It’s a mix of fun, charity, and a bit of bravery. But this year, the weather is throwing a wrench in the plans.

The Met Office has issued a wind warning for New Year’s Day, especially in north Wales. Coastal areas could see winds gusting up to 75 mph, which is pretty wild.

Because of this, many events are either postponed or cancelled. Some swims are still on, while others are not so lucky. Here’s the scoop on what’s happening.

First up, the Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim is still a go! Over 2,100 swimmers have signed up, so it’s shaping up to be a big event.

Lido Ponty is also moving ahead with their swim, but they’re keeping a close eye on the weather. If things change, ticket holders will be notified.

Over at Barry Island, the dip is still on, but participants are advised to be cautious and not go too deep into the sea.

The Abersoch RNLI swim is tentatively scheduled, with a final call to be made on the day itself. They’re optimistic about the weather improving.

On the flip side, the St David’s Penknife Club swim at Whitesands Bay has been cancelled for safety reasons. The RNLI has warned against entering the water there due to a lack of lifeguard coverage.

Similarly, the RNLI Porthdinllaen dip has been postponed. They made the tough call after considering the weather forecast and everyone’s safety.

In Newport, the Mayor’s swim has also been called off due to dangerous conditions. The tide and wind made it too risky to proceed.

Lastly, the Angle New Year’s Day swim has been pushed to February 1, 2025, due to a Yellow Weather Warning. Safety is the top priority for everyone involved.
