Sir Dr Frank Atherton announces his departure as Wales’ chief medical officer after nearly a decade of dedicated service
Cardiff: So, Sir Dr Frank Atherton, the top doc in Wales, is stepping down after eight and a half years. He’s been the chief medical officer for the Welsh Government, and it’s a big deal.
During his time, he’s given solid advice on all sorts of health issues in Wales. Remember the COVID-19 pandemic? He was a key player in how Wales handled it, making sure everyone got the right info to stay safe.
He’s also been there for the NHS during flu seasons and those tough winter months. Before this gig, he was working in Canada, so he’s got quite the background.
Health Secretary Jeremy Miles thanked him for his hard work, saying he’s been invaluable. He really helped keep people informed during the pandemic, which was no small feat.
Judith Paget from NHS Wales also praised him, saying he’s super passionate about improving health for everyone in Wales. She felt lucky to work alongside him and appreciated his experience.
Sir Frank himself said it’s been a privilege to serve as CMO, especially during such challenging times. He’s grateful to all the civil servants who helped him along the way.
As for who will take over, that’s still to be announced. But it’s clear he’s left some big shoes to fill!
