Flu hospital admissions in Wales have surged, raising concerns for the holiday season and urging precautions for vulnerable populations
Cardiff: There’s a real worry brewing in Wales as flu cases are spiking just before Christmas. Hospitals are seeing a big jump in admissions, nearly 50% more in just a week. It’s a trend that’s got everyone on edge.
Public Health Wales shared some eye-opening stats. In the week leading up to December 15, there were 195 flu-related hospital admissions, up from 135 the week before. That’s a whopping 44% increase! And if you look back a month, the numbers are even more shocking—just 30 admissions back then. It’s like a rollercoaster ride, but not the fun kind.
To make matters worse, this year’s admissions are three and a half times higher than last year at this time. Folks with lung issues are being told to stay on top of their flu shots and steer clear of anyone showing cold or flu symptoms.
Joseph Carter from Asthma + Lung UK Cymru expressed his concerns, saying it’s really alarming to see these rising numbers. He emphasized that people with lung conditions need to protect themselves by getting their free flu vaccine. This winter, they’re facing a triple threat with flu, COVID-19, and RSV all in the mix.
For those with asthma, catching the flu could lead to serious complications, even a life-threatening asthma attack. So, it’s super important for them to keep up with their medications and avoid sick folks. Hospitals are already feeling the strain, especially with the holiday rush.
Just this week, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board had to ask some people not to come to their A&E because they were swamped. Meanwhile, Hywel Dda University Health Board is also feeling the heat, especially at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, where flu cases are piling up.
