Cardiff: So, Sir Dr Frank Atherton, the guy who really stepped up during the Covid crisis in Wales, is calling it a day. He’s been the chief medical officer for over eight years, and he just announced he’s stepping down.
He mentioned it was a real privilege to serve in this role, especially during such a tough time for everyone. The Welsh Government will let us know who’s taking over soon.
Dr Atherton was the go-to person for health advice during the pandemic. He was on our screens a lot, sharing important updates and stats about the virus. People got to know him well.
Before this role, he had quite the journey, working in places like Malawi and Canada. He took over as chief medical officer back in August 2016, following Dr Ruth Hussey.
Wales’ Health Secretary, Jeremy Miles, praised him for his invaluable guidance during the pandemic. He really helped keep everyone informed about staying safe.
Judith Paget from NHS Wales also spoke highly of him, saying he’s been passionate about improving health for the Welsh people. It’s clear he’s made a big impact.
As he prepares to leave, Dr Atherton expressed gratitude to all the civil servants who supported him over the years. It’s been quite a ride for him, and he’s leaving behind a strong legacy.
