Cardiff: Wales Under 20s have pulled off a great move by getting Luke Evans, a towering second-row from Exeter Chiefs, to join their ranks. This 18-year-old was initially with the Wales U18s but switched to England U18s last season. However, the Welsh Rugby Union managed to convince him to come back and play for Wales U20s this season.

Evans is eligible to play for both countries, and while playing for Wales U20s doesn’t lock him in, it’s still a big win for the WRU. Standing at 6ft 8in, he’s got the size and skills that Wales really needs right now, especially in the second-row position.

He’s known for being a strong lineout forward and a tough carrier, plus he’s got a solid work rate and is pretty physical in defense. Richard Whiffin, the coach, mentioned that they worked hard to build a connection with him, especially since he’s been in the Exeter system.

Whiffin said it was easier for Evans to choose England before, but they’ve done a good job of bringing him back into the Welsh setup. With a Welsh parent and an English parent, he’s dual-qualified, which adds to the excitement of having him on board.

Wales has seen many players head to England, with clubs there often preferring to have Welsh players represent them. For instance, players like Kane James and Kepu Tuipulotu are now in the England U20s squad. But getting Evans for the upcoming Six Nations is a real boost for the Welsh team.

The WRU has faced criticism lately, especially after Immanuel Feyi-Waboso chose to play for England at the senior level. With many young Welsh talents going to English schools, the WRU needs to step up to keep its players.

Whiffin noted that Gloucester has been supportive, and with Gareth Delve helping, they’re working to keep Welsh players in Wales for as long as possible. They’re focused on building relationships and creating chances for players to wear the red jersey.

He added that in the past, players like Evans and James went the English route because they were approached first. But things are changing, and next year’s calendar will have more U18 fixtures and camps to help keep young players Welsh.
