Sandwich: Walking through the quaint streets of Sandwich in Kent is like stepping into a storybook. The town is a well-preserved gem, showcasing its medieval roots.

With charming half-timbered houses and historical sites around every corner, it’s hard not to feel enchanted. Millie Bull, a lifestyle editor, recently stayed in a cozy cottage here with her family, and she couldn’t stop raving about it.

The cottage had those lovely original beams and a cozy vibe, right by the River Stour. The only thing missing was a sprinkle of snow for that perfect Christmas morning feel.

Even though many places were closed during the holidays, Millie enjoyed wandering around with her dog, soaking in the town’s rich history. Some buildings date back to the 16th century, like the Sandwich Guildhall Museum, which was built in 1579.

Speaking of the museum, it’s a fantastic starting point to dive into Sandwich’s past. It tells the story of the town from its early days to now, and it even houses the 1300 AD Sandwich Magna Carta, which is worth a whopping £10 million!

The museum itself is stunning, with a courtroom featuring wooden panels from 1607 and a beautiful stained glass window depicting Queen Elizabeth I’s visit in 1573.

Another must-see is Fisher Gate, a medieval town gate that’s still standing strong. It’s the only original gate left in Sandwich and is a Grade I-listed building.

Millie also recommends checking out The Barbican, a unique 16th-century bastion that used to protect the town. Its distinctive brickwork really makes it stand out.

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, The George & Dragon pub is a local favorite. It serves up classic pub grub, and you can enjoy a pint while imagining the Tudor period.

For a more upscale meal, The Toll Bridge Restaurant & Bar is a great choice. Millie loved their ‘Smokey Bento Box’—it was a feast for the senses!

History buffs will find plenty to explore, like the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre, where you can see a restored smock mill. And don’t miss the Sandwich circular walking trail, which takes you past 25 key landmarks in just about an hour.

Sandwich isn’t just about history; it’s surrounded by beautiful nature, too. Gazen Salts Nature Reserve is perfect for a peaceful escape, and golfers can enjoy the prestigious Royal St. George’s Golf Club.

Interestingly, Ian Fleming even featured this course in his James Bond novel, Goldfinger. Plus, the town has these fascinating medieval streams that still run underground today.

As a market town, Sandwich is also a great spot for shopping, with a mix of independent shops and well-known brands. It’s no wonder The Telegraph named it one of the best market towns in Britain!

Getting to Sandwich is easy, whether you’re driving or taking the train. It’s just a short trip from London, making it a perfect day out.
