Tamworth: I recently found myself in this charming town in Staffordshire. I was there to check out the local shopping centre, which was in a bit of a rough patch. The place looked like a construction zone, but there was one spot that stood out.

The Tamworth Tap was buzzing on a gloomy Wednesday evening. It was packed with happy folks enjoying drinks you won’t find anywhere else. This pub is right in the heart of town, just a stone’s throw from a statue of Robert Peel, a former Prime Minister.

I’ve spent over a decade working in Tamworth, often popping into the town centre with my mate Dan. He used to grab a jacket potato from Spudman, who’s now a TikTok star with long queues at his new spot.

Recently, I was asked to check out the Ankerside Shopping Centre, which was given back to the council for free. Locals have mixed feelings about it, loving and hating it in equal measure. You can read more about that elsewhere.

After wandering around for a while, I finally stepped into the Tamworth Tap. This place has won Pub of the Year twice and just snagged the title of Best Pub for Beer at the Great British Pub Awards.

Even though it’s only seven years old, the Tamworth Tap has already made a name for itself. It’s an old-fashioned brewpub that was created in an empty shop, and it’s full of life. You can see groups of friends and couples enjoying their time together.

The pub is located right under Tamworth Castle and offers a fantastic range of beers. The owners, George and Louise Greenaway, opened it in 2017, starting as a microbrewery before expanding into a full pub with an outdoor kitchen.

The judges loved their passion for real ale and their commitment to staff training and cellar management. They’re really putting Tamworth on the beer map!

I asked the bar staff about their stouts and was shown two seasonal options. I went for the Cosmic Santa, a festive breakfast stout with coffee notes. It was a nice choice since I had to drive home.

The downstairs bar was lively, with groups chatting away. If you head upstairs, there are even more seating options. They must get packed on weekends!

The Tamworth Tap has a cozy vibe with wooden floors and walls adorned with real ale memorabilia. I found a spot at the bar and enjoyed my pint while checking out the list of cask ales available.

They had a great selection, with prices ranging from £4.20 to £5.50. There’s also a second bar with a variety of drinks, including their own Tamworth Lager and some Belgian options.

Outside, there’s a board listing events like live music and craft workshops. They even have a display showing train times from the nearby station, which is a nice touch.

The pub is well-kept, with clean facilities and even a jar of mince pies for the festive season. It celebrated its seventh birthday recently and has won awards for its beer garden too.

Stepping inside the Tamworth Tap is like escaping the chaos outside. It’s a place that’s truly put Tamworth back on the map, and I’d say it’s definitely worth a visit!
