A man suffered a serious brain injury after being attacked outside a Nottingham bar, leading to legal consequences for the assailants.
Nottingham: A man was left with a brain injury after a brutal attack outside a nightclub. The incident happened outside the old Sky Bar in The Cornerhouse.
Two men, Marcus Wynter and Varnell Bennett, got into a fight with the victim. They punched him repeatedly, and he ended up falling and hitting his head on the pavement.
When he fell, he lost consciousness. Another guy tried to help but got punched in the face by Bennett. It was a chaotic scene, and a lot of young people were around to witness it.
The court heard that Wynter had a history of trouble, having been involved in the Nottingham riots back in 2011. The judge didn’t hold back, calling the violence “nasty” and saying the two men should be ashamed of their actions.
The attack took place in the early hours of April 10, 2023. The victim ended up at the hospital, where doctors found he had a bleed on the brain and some cuts on his lip.
In a statement, the first victim said he now feels anxious in social situations and has nightmares about what happened. The second victim, who tried to help, said he was devastated because he couldn’t play football due to his injuries.
Both Wynter and Bennett were arrested but didn’t say much during questioning. Wynter pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and has been in trouble before, while Bennett also admitted to his charges.
They both received suspended sentences, meaning they won’t go to jail right away, but they have to complete community service and pay compensation to the victims.
Interestingly, the bar where this all went down has had its share of trouble. It closed permanently in August last year after another unrelated stabbing incident.
