A woman shares her trauma after a man was convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault, leaving her deeply affected.
Cornwall: A woman has bravely opened up about the emotional turmoil she’s been through after a man named Daniel Thomas tried to rape her and sexually assaulted her. She’s been really struggling since the incident, and it’s clear that his actions have left a lasting mark on her life.
Thomas, who lives in Roche, faced the music at Truro Crown Court after a jury found him guilty of attempted rape and sexual assault. The judge, Simon Carr, listened as the victim explained how she told Thomas she wasn’t interested, but he completely disregarded her feelings, only thinking about his own desires.
In her victim impact statement, she described feeling “scarred” both physically and mentally. She mentioned that her self-harming has gotten worse since the assault. It’s heartbreaking to hear her say that self-harming feels like a protective measure, making her feel less attractive to men. She knows there’s no shame in discussing mental health, but she worries about how to explain her scars to her future kids.
She also shared how tough it was to relive her trauma during the trial, which made her feel sick. Judge Carr acknowledged the devastating impact Thomas’ actions have had on her and those around her. He noted that while she’s trying to move forward, the psychological scars are evident.
In the end, Thomas was sentenced to six years in prison. He’ll also be on the sex offenders register for life and has a restraining order against him. It’s a tough situation, but hopefully, this will help the victim find some peace.
