A vet expert highlights popular dog breeds and the health issues to be aware of for each breed, helping potential owners make informed choices
London: It’s no surprise that the UK loves dogs, with around 10.6 million furry friends around. A recent report from the PDSA has shared which breeds are the most popular this year, highlighting the top five in England.
PDSA Vet Nurse Gemma Renwick has pointed out some health issues to keep an eye on for these breeds, ranging from skin problems to serious conditions like epilepsy.
First up is the Crossbreed. They’re not a specific breed but are the most popular choice among dog owners. Crossbreeds are often healthier than purebreds, but some designer mixes can face similar health risks due to selective breeding.
Next is the Labrador Retriever, a beloved family dog known for its love of food. While they’re friendly and fun, Labs can easily become overweight, leading to other health issues. They also face risks like hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
In third place, we have the Cockapoo, a mix of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. These pups are energetic and loving but need regular grooming to avoid tangles. They can inherit health issues from both parent breeds, including hip dysplasia and skin allergies.
The German Shepherd comes in fourth. Known for their intelligence and trainability, they make great working dogs and family pets. However, they can suffer from hip dysplasia and other serious conditions like degenerative myelopathy.
Finally, the English Cocker Spaniel rounds out the top five. These lively dogs are known for their happy demeanor but require plenty of exercise. They can face health issues like hip dysplasia and ear problems.
Gemma emphasizes the importance of researching breeds before bringing a dog home. It’s crucial to choose a healthy puppy from a responsible breeder who conducts health tests. Remember, every dog is unique, and their upbringing plays a big role in their health and behavior.
According to the PDSA, here are the population estimates for the most common breeds in the UK: Crossbreed – 1.3 million, Labrador Retriever – 970,000, Cockapoo – 590,000, German Shepherd – 550,000, and English Cocker Spaniel – 350,000.
