Pensioners are being warned about scammers targeting a council’s air fryer giveaway, urging caution against fake messages asking for money.
North Lincolnshire: So, here’s the scoop. A bunch of pensioners were all set to get free air fryers from the council, but now there’s a nasty scam going around. Some scammers are sending fake texts, trying to trick folks into giving away their cash.
The council has already handed out over 1,000 air fryers and plans to give away even more. This is all part of a response to rising energy costs after the government cut the universal winter fuel payment for older people.
But now, these scammers are sending texts that ask people to click a link to confirm their address and pay a pound for delivery. The council is clear: if you get one of these messages, it’s a scam. Don’t click anything or share your info!
Cllr Rob Waltham, the council leader, mentioned that many pensioners are struggling with their energy bills, especially as winter hits hard. They want to help by providing energy-efficient cooking appliances and even cooking lessons to help save on bills.
They’re also planning to give out slow cookers and kettles as part of this energy efficiency scheme. The council is doing its best to support older residents, especially after the government’s decision to limit winter fuel payments.
They’re even offering sessions for over 700 seniors to learn how to use their new air fryers effectively. The council has already delivered over 1,000 appliances but is asking everyone to be patient as they work through the demand.
There’s been a lot of frustration with the government’s changes to the winter fuel payment, and many feel like their voices aren’t being heard. If you’ve been affected by any scams or issues with your winter fuel payment, reach out for help.
