A Cork city group urgently seeks transport for a soup run and vigil to support the homeless community during the cold weather
Cork: A local support group is in a bit of a bind. They really need a vehicle to help provide hot meals and drinks to those in need, especially with the chilly weather hitting hard.
Hazel Dennehy, who co-founded the non-profit soup run called Street Angels, is reaching out for help. They’re planning their first soup run of 2025 tomorrow, and she’s hoping someone with a vehicle can lend a hand.
Sadly, their van broke down just yesterday, which is the worst timing ever. Many folks in Cork’s homeless community depend on them for support right now. If Hazel can’t find a way to get their gear into the city by 7 PM, they might have to cancel both the soup run and a vigil for a man named Peter Casey, who was a regular user of their services and passed away on Christmas Day.
Hazel shared with CorkBeo that Peter was a close friend of hers. She’s expecting a big turnout for the event tomorrow, and it means a lot to her and the team.
She said, “The van broke down yesterday, and now I’ve nothing to do the soup run or the vigil with tomorrow. I have another jeep, but that’s broken too at the moment, and the quote I got for repairs was very expensive. Peter was a very close friend of mine. He had always been there to hold me up for every vigil we did last year, and I’d hate to have to cancel on him.”
Hazel is asking anyone with a vehicle who’s free tomorrow afternoon or evening to help her out. She needs someone to pick her up from Mallow and drive to Cork city to collect their equipment from storage at Twopothouse near Doneraile.
Once the soup run wraps up, she’ll also need a ride back to return the gear and get home. If you think you can help, you can reach Hazel at 0857757986.
