Witnesses report thick black smoke rising into the sky. People are watching from a distance, unable to help.

Ten fire engines were sent to the scene after the alarm went off around 11:55 AM. Firefighters are working hard to control the blaze.

Authorities have warned the public to stay away. Merseyside Police have set up a cordon for safety.

One witness shared on social media that traffic is at a standstill near the town hall. Police are managing the situation.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed they arrived at 12:09 PM. They have secured water supplies and are using aerial appliances to fight the fire.

The building was empty when the fire started. The nearby Meadows Leisure Centre was evacuated safely.
