The community mourns the loss of Howard Briggs, a dedicated leader and beloved figure in Southend
Southend: People are really feeling the loss of Howard Briggs, who recently passed away. He was a well-known figure in the community, having served as a councillor, leader, and Mayor of Southend.
During his time as Mayor from 2001 to 2002, he truly dedicated himself to the community. After that, he led the Southend-on-Sea Council from 2003 to 2005.
In 2018, he was honored with the title of Alderman for his long-standing commitment to the area. Many have shared heartfelt tributes, calling him “rightly respected” and highlighting his charity work after his passing on December 30.
Cllr Daniel Cowan, the Council leader, expressed his sadness, saying Howard was a highly respected former councillor and Mayor. He emphasized Howard’s unwavering dedication to Southend-on-Sea and extended his thoughts to Howard’s family and friends.
Meanwhile, Cllr Ron Woodley, the current Mayor, shared condolences on behalf of the City and the Council. He noted Howard’s lasting impact on the community, praising his passion and kindness.
Local Conservative leader Cllr James Courtenay also shared his sadness, recalling Howard’s decades of service. He mentioned the impressive £127,000 Howard raised during his mayoral year and the Southend Fund he helped establish, which still supports local charities.
Howard was not just a leader; he was a mentor to many, including Cllr Courtenay, who appreciated Howard’s support as he began his own political journey. He will be greatly missed.
