A devastating accident at a busy Essex train station has resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries, shocking the local community.
Essex: It’s hard to believe that a bustling train station was once the scene of such a tragic event. Back in 1913, a terrible accident unfolded here that changed lives forever.
On July 12, an express train heading to Cromer collided with a light engine. This happened because a signalman made a mistake. The express train was speeding, and when it derailed, chaos ensued.
Sadly, three people lost their lives that day, and many others were hurt. The express train should have been stopped, but a signal error allowed it to barrel through a junction, leading to disaster.
When the collision happened, it was too late to prevent it. The train driver, a guard, and a fireman were killed instantly. Fourteen passengers were also injured in the wreck.
In the aftermath, MPs even talked about launching a full inquiry into what went wrong, but it was ultimately deemed an accident. Today, Colchester train station is still a busy place, with little reminder of that fateful day over a century ago.
