A heartbreaking incident unfolded when a man was discovered next to his father’s body, leading to a tragic outcome for the family involved
Hull: A tragic story has emerged about a man named David Lodge, who was found lying next to his father’s body. This heartbreaking scene unfolded four days after his dad, Peter, passed away.
David, 40, had a tough life. He was born with several disabilities, including dysarthria and dyspraxia, which made communication difficult. He was also registered blind and diagnosed with autism.
After a serious illness in 2017, he lost the ability to walk and relied on a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, he enjoyed simple pleasures like swimming and watching movies with his dad.
On January 12, 2022, David’s sister, Keri, went to their home and made the devastating discovery. She found David weak but alive, lying next to Peter’s body.
David was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, where medical staff quickly assessed him. They realized he needed fluids and warmth after being in such a dire situation for days.
However, things took a turn for the worse. Although he had a hospital passport, the consultant didn’t know about it and didn’t ask to see it. David was sedated, but his condition was serious.
As time went on, his health deteriorated. He was moved to the Acute Admissions Unit, but unfortunately, he went into cardiac arrest and passed away early the next morning.
An inquest revealed several failings in his care. Experts noted that if he had been referred to critical care, his life might have been saved. The coroner concluded that neglect contributed to his death.
David’s family expressed their heartbreak over the situation. They felt that the system failed him during his final days. They hope that lessons will be learned to prevent such tragedies in the future.
In response, Hull Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust extended their condolences and promised to review their processes to improve care.
