The inquest into Tom Voyce’s tragic death reveals his car was found submerged after Storm Darragh swept it away
Northumberland: So, here’s the sad story about Tom Voyce, the former England rugby player. His car was found in 7 feet of water after it got swept away during Storm Darragh. It’s just heartbreaking.
Tom’s Toyota Hilux was discovered in the River Aln, and sadly, his body was found a few days later, downstream. He had tried to drive through a ford at Abberwick when the storm hit.
The inquest kicked off at County Hall in Morpeth. The coroner shared that Tom was last seen leaving a pub late at night on December 7. His wife, Anna, reported him missing the next day when he didn’t come home.
When they searched the river, they found his car empty and submerged. It took a few days, but they eventually found Tom’s body in deeper water. The coroner has put the inquest on hold for now, with plans to wrap it up on April 1.
After the tragic news, Anna expressed how devastated and heartbroken they were. They had a son together, Oscar, and had moved to Northumberland where Tom started a new business after his rugby career.
Tom had a solid rugby career, starting at Bath, then moving to Wasps, where he won some big titles, before finishing up at Gloucester. He played over 220 matches in the Premiership before hanging up his boots in 2013.
