A dedicated group in Swansea creates thousands of toys yearly to bring joy to sick children in local hospitals and communities
Swansea: A small group of volunteers is doing something amazing. They’re making toys for sick kids, and it’s all thanks to Wendy Bartlett and her team. Wendy started the Swansea Bay Community Whizzknits Volunteers to give back after her family faced serious health issues.
Wendy runs her own business, but her heart is in this project. She realized her knitting hobby could bring smiles to kids in hospitals. It’s not just about the toys; it’s about making a difference.
Now, Wendy leads a team of 612 volunteers who craft unique items for patients and the community. During the pandemic, they made 1,500 knitted hearts for patients in the Intensive Therapy Unit. In 2024 alone, they produced over 7,000 items!
Wendy pointed out that this initiative helps not just the kids but also the volunteers. Many of them found friendship and purpose through their work. “It’s a warm, inviting space where people come together,” she said.
Some volunteers knit, while others wrap gifts or deliver items. “They’re dedicated and special people,” Wendy added. “Watching their commitment is one of my proudest moments.”
The Whizzknits operate out of a rented space in Cockett, Swansea, where they create 400-600 items each month. These toys are designed to comfort kids during their hospital visits, often becoming their little friends.
All toys are made from UK-approved wool and are carefully inspected. Presentation matters too; each toy is wrapped beautifully, making it feel like a special gift for the kids.
But they don’t stop at toys. The group also makes items for mental health patients, blankets for those in end-of-life care, and educational toys for local schools. “We do it for everyone in the community,” Wendy said. “Our team is the backbone of support, and I admire them so much.”
