A massive turnout is expected in Barry this April for a march advocating for Welsh independence, organized by YesCymru and AUOBCymru.
Barry: So, there’s a big march happening in Barry this April, and it’s all about Welsh independence. Thousands are expected to show up, and it’s organized by YesCymru and AUOBCymru. These marches have been going on since 2019 in various places like Caernarfon and Cardiff.
The last one in Cardiff pulled in over 10,000 people, and they’re hoping for a similar crowd this time around. Barry is a special spot for this event because it was a key player in the Cymru Fydd movement back in the 1890s, which pushed for Welsh self-governance.
Mark Hooper, a local councillor and one of the organizers, mentioned that the desire for self-determination in Wales is still very strong. He emphasized the importance of remembering the past while looking forward to a future that aligns with Welsh values.
Phyl Griffiths, the chair of YesCymru, also shared their vision for an independent Wales that celebrates everyone living there. They’re inviting folks to join them in Barry on April 26 to make their voices heard.
However, a recent YouGov poll showed that only about 24% of people in Wales support full independence, while 61% are against it. It seems like many people are indifferent about whether the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament, should be abolished or not.
Interestingly, even among Plaid Cymru voters, who generally support independence, only 58% are fully on board. Most of them prefer more powers for the Senedd instead. It’s a mixed bag of opinions, but the push for independence is definitely alive and kicking!
