Crowdfunding efforts for two East Yorkshire teens have surpassed £24,000, honoring their memory after a tragic New Year’s Day accident
Howden: It’s heartbreaking to hear about the tragic loss of two teenagers in East Yorkshire. William Herbert, just 16, and Olly Mitchell, 18, were involved in a car crash on New Year’s Day. Their families and friends have come together to support crowdfunding campaigns in their memory, raising nearly £24,000.
William’s GoFundMe page has seen an outpouring of love, with donations far exceeding the initial target of £10,000. Katherine Howard, who organized the appeal, expressed deep gratitude for the support. She said it’s been a comfort during this tough time, showing just how much William was loved.
Olly’s aunt, Joanna Wildon, also set up a GoFundMe for him. She shared how much he meant to the family and how his bright future was tragically cut short. The goal for his fundraiser was £2,000, but it has already reached over £9,000, thanks to nearly 350 generous donors.
The accident occurred when their Volkswagen Golf collided with another vehicle in the early hours. Sadly, William died at the scene, and Olly later passed away in the hospital. Two other passengers in their car were seriously injured, and the driver of the other vehicle also sustained injuries.
It’s a tough situation for everyone involved, and the community is rallying to support the families. The driver of the Golf has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and the investigation is ongoing. It’s a tragic reminder of how quickly life can change.
