Newcastle: It looks like thousands of council homes in Newcastle might have some unsafe staircases. That’s a bit worrying, right?

They’ve found around 3,323 homes and 57 communal blocks that could need some serious repairs. The issue is with these ‘ranch style’ bannisters. Apparently, they have horizontal bars that are now considered a no-go under current safety rules. The worry is that kids could climb them and either fall or get stuck.

A report from Newcastle City Council says this design is a big deal, classified as a category one hazard. They’re urging anyone with concerns to reach out. Since taking back control of their social housing stock in 2024, the council has discovered 16 areas where they’re not meeting new safety standards.

For those 57 communal blocks, they’ve already hired a contractor to fix the staircases, aiming to finish by August. They’ve also sent letters to the 3,323 homes that might have these risky staircases.

But here’s the catch: some residents aren’t keen on having the staircases replaced, and there are language barriers for others. It’s a bit of a tricky situation.

A spokesperson from the council mentioned that they’ve been getting feedback about these ranch-style staircases. They’re worried about kids using them like ladders. They’ve reached out to residents to let them know about the safety issues and the plans for replacements.

They’re also doing surveys and visits to chat with residents about any worries they might have. The removal of the unsafe staircases is already in progress.

For now, residents with these staircases don’t need to do anything. The council will contact them directly when it’s time for the replacements. If anyone has safety concerns, they can get in touch with the Assets team via email or phone.
