Every year, I eagerly anticipate a magical Christmas Eve carol service that fills my heart with joy and warmth
Cardiff: You know that feeling when you’re trying to snag tickets for a big event? Well, that’s exactly what I went through recently, but it wasn’t for a concert. Nope, I was after tickets for the Christmas Eve carol service at Llandaff Cathedral.
This place is pure magic, and I wasn’t about to miss out again. Last year, I logged on too late and found everything sold out. So, this time, I marked the date in my calendar and set my alarm bright and early.
Llandaff Cathedral is tucked away in a lovely spot, almost like a hidden gem. You don’t really see it until you’re right there, standing on Cathedral Green. The anticipation builds as you walk down the steps, escaping the chilly December air for the warmth inside.
The service is called Nine Lessons and Carols, and it starts as the sun sets. It’s such a cozy atmosphere, surrounded by others who are just as excited. The choir kicks things off with a soloist singing “Once in Royal David’s City,” and then everyone joins in. By the time we get to “Hark The Herald Angels Sing,” it’s just breathtaking.
When the service wraps up, everyone spills out into the night, filled with that Christmas spirit. I usually have tears in my eyes, but it’s all good. Afterward, heading to a nearby pub like The Butchers or The Heathcock is the perfect way to warm up.
If you didn’t get a ticket or can’t make it to Llandaff, don’t worry! There are other lovely carol services around. One of my favorites is at the St Fagans National Museum of History in Pen-rhiw Chapel. It’s got that old-world charm, and you can really feel the history there.
So, whether you’re at Llandaff or somewhere else, I hope you find your own special way to celebrate this Christmas. Merry Christmas!
