Newbridge: Tesco just got the green light to sell alcohol at a new store they’re planning to open in a former church. Pretty cool, right?

They’re taking over the old Methodist Church on Bridge Street and turning it into a Tesco Express. The store is expected to open its doors in late 2025.

During a recent meeting, the council’s licensing committee heard that Tesco wants to sell alcohol from 6 am to midnight every day. But some folks are worried about how that might affect the neighbors.

One council member, Gareth Jones, pointed out that the area is pretty quiet and said the late hours could be tough on the residents living nearby.

He suggested limiting the alcohol sales to 7 am to 11 pm on weekdays and 7 am to 10 pm on Sundays instead. Fair point, right?

Jeremy Bark, who was there representing Tesco, defended their approach to alcohol sales. He said they prefer to be cautious and responsible about it.

In response to the concerns, he offered a compromise: selling alcohol from 6 am to 11 pm daily. He mentioned that usually, the guidance allows for those hours unless there’s a strong reason to restrict them.

In the end, the committee agreed to the compromise hours, but they added some conditions like having CCTV and proper staff training to keep things in check.
