A teenage driver lost control while showing off, leading to a serious head-on collision that left two people with life-altering injuries
Newcastle Emlyn: A newly qualified driver, Gareth Jones, was trying to impress his passenger when he lost control on a bend. This reckless move led to a head-on crash with another car, leaving both drivers with serious injuries.
In court, the judge didn’t hold back, calling Jones’ driving “utterly ridiculous.” He noted that while the teen’s actions were extreme, his age played a role in the sentencing. The crash happened on May 30, 2023, on the B4333.
The other driver, in a red Jaguar, was slowing down for a sharp turn when he spotted Jones’ white Dacia coming straight at him. Despite trying to swerve, the impact was heavy, causing significant damage to both cars. After the crash, Jones admitted he was going too fast.
The Jaguar driver initially refused medical help but later went to the hospital with whiplash and a brain bleed. Meanwhile, Jones’ passenger suffered serious injuries, including a lacerated liver and a fractured vertebra. She had to wear a back brace for three months.
Both victims shared how the crash affected their lives. The Jaguar driver now feels anxious on the road and struggles with PTSD. He mentioned that even simple tasks like DIY have become tough for him. The emotional toll has been heavy.
Jones’ passenger also opened up about her struggles. She’s had nightmares and lost her confidence, even having to pause her studies. But she’s determined to get back to college despite the challenges.
Now 19, Jones had only passed his driving test three months before the crash. His lawyer admitted he was driving at 49 mph, which was too fast for the corner. Jones himself was injured and spent 17 days in the hospital.
In the end, the judge sentenced Jones to an 18-month suspended sentence, along with community service and a driving ban. He emphasized that the only reason Jones wasn’t going to jail was his age. The judge also expressed frustration over the delays in the case.
