Swansea: A bunch of aviation enthusiasts has taken the reins at Swansea Airport, and they’re making some pretty cool changes. This group, which includes folks from all walks of life, like engineers and even a heart surgeon, stepped in after the previous operator threw in the towel.

They’ve got some exciting plans lined up, like a Spitfire flight experience starting this spring. Plus, they’re chatting with a company that offers wing walks for those looking for a thrill. And if you’re hungry, the airport’s cafe has a new tenant serving up Thai food a few nights a week.

Bob Oliver, the alliance chairman, mentioned they’re already seeing more pilots flying in. It seems word is getting around that this place has a friendly vibe. Everyone’s pitching in, and it’s been a real team effort since they took over.

On day one, Bob was there bright and early, figuring out how to get things rolling. They’ve set up a phone line, arranged for new aviation fuel, and even got some training for volunteers. It’s all about making the airport better, and they’ve got a solid group of over 150 members helping out.

They’re also working closely with an aviation consultant to get everything in order for a potential license from the Civil Aviation Authority. The council is looking for a long-term operator, but for now, this group is just keeping things running smoothly.

Bob believes the airport can really benefit the community, offering space for charities and businesses. He even suggested using part of the site for tree-planting to help the environment. The airport has a rich history, originally part of Gower’s Fairwood Common, and it’s been through a lot since its days as a WWII airfield.

As for safety, they’re training volunteers to operate the fire truck, and they’ve got plans in place for emergencies. The council is keeping an eye on their progress, and while the airport isn’t licensed yet, it’s still buzzing with activity.

Bob, who’s putting in a ton of hours each week, feels this is a great opportunity to make a difference. And with the new cafe serving up tasty food, it looks like Swansea Airport is on the up and up!
