Lloyds Banking Group plans to close 136 branches, impacting seven in Surrey
Walton’s Halifax branch has already closed. Camberley’s branch will shut in March. Many areas in Surrey will feel the impact of these closures.
Since 2022, four Lloyds branches have closed in Surrey. By May 2024, the number of closures was described as an “avalanche.” Major banks like NatWest and HSBC are also leaving the high street.
In total, 32 banks in Surrey have closed or will close since February 2022. Lloyds will have 386 branches left in the UK by 2026. Halifax will drop to 281 branches, and Bank of Scotland will have 90.
Lloyds says fewer people are using in-person banking. Transactions at the affected branches fell by 48% over five years.
All employees at closing branches will be offered jobs elsewhere in the company. Recently, Lloyds changed its banking model. Customers can now use Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland interchangeably.
Cash Access UK is leading the Banking Hub program with the Post Office. These hubs are shared spaces for different banks. Surrey has a hub in Haslemere, with another opening in Dorking in 2025.
LINK, the UK’s cash access network, plans to open a new hub in Caterham. Dr. Chris Ashton from LINK says many still rely on cash and face-to-face banking. The new hub will be important for the local community.
