Surrey: More than 25 banks have closed in the last three years. More are set to close by 2025. An interactive map shows where branches have shut down.

Since 2022, over 1,700 banks have closed across the UK. Nearly 300 are scheduled to shut this year alone. In Surrey, 26 banks closed before New Year’s Day 2025.

This year, four more banks are closing. The Halifax in Walton-on-Thames was expected to shut recently. The Halifax in Camberley is set to close in March.

Lloyds also announced closures affecting three Surrey branches. The Caterham branch will close in March, and the Godalming branch will shut in May. The Halifax in Epsom will close in September.

Surrey has seen closures in many areas. Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Tandridge, and Waverley each lost five banks. Reigate and Banstead lost four, while Woking and Guildford lost two each.

The trend of bank closures is not slowing down. Lloyds announced it will close 61 branches of Lloyds, 61 Halifax, and 14 Bank of Scotland between May and March 2026.

This year, 289 branches are scheduled to close, with more closures expected next year. Last year saw 399 closures, and 633 in 2023.

Since February 2022, 1,784 bank branches have closed or announced closures. That’s about 50 closures each month, or 11 per week.

The LINK initiative aims to help those affected by closures. It ensures vulnerable customers and small businesses have access to cash and banking services.

Bank closures are affecting all parts of the UK. England has lost 1,468 branches, Scotland 163, Wales 105, Northern Ireland 47, and one in the Isle of Wight.

Age UK warns that the loss of face-to-face banking could hurt elderly people. Many older adults struggle to manage their money online.

Charity director Caroline Abrahams emphasizes the need for physical banking services. She calls for shared banking hubs in areas losing branches.

LINK’s Adrian Roberts highlights that many still rely on cash. Access to cash must remain available, even as branches close.

Cat Farrow from Cash Access UK mentions progress in opening banking hubs. The 100th hub opened in December, with more expected this year.
