Newcastle: The UK is gearing up for Storm Eowyn, which is rolling in this Friday. An Amber weather warning is already in place for the North East, so folks should be prepared.

From 6am to 9pm, we’re looking at some serious winds, with gusts hitting 60-70mph. Coastal areas might even see winds up to 90mph. Plus, there’s heavy rain and maybe some snow on the way, so it could get messy.

According to the Met Office, the winds will start picking up early Friday morning. By 6am, most places will already be feeling gusts over 50mph. The strongest winds are expected around midday, so hold onto your hats!

In fact, Berwick is bracing for the worst, with gusts projected to reach 79mph. But it’s not just up north; Hartlepool is also in for a wild ride with winds around 67mph.

Throughout the afternoon, most areas will see winds in the high sixties or low seventies. Newcastle is expected to peak at 72mph, while Sunderland and parts of Northumberland will also feel the impact.

The Met Office is warning that travel could be a nightmare. Roads, trains, and even ferries might face delays or cancellations. So, if you’re planning to head out, it’s best to check ahead.

Rail services are already affected, with LNER announcing no trains will run north of Newcastle after 11am. And if you’re driving, be extra cautious. Some roads and bridges might close due to the high winds.

Mark Nash from National Highways advises everyone to prepare for their journeys and adjust their driving if conditions get tough. Safety first, right?

For those in the affected areas, make sure your property is secure. Check for anything outside that could get blown away, like bins or garden furniture. And keep an eye on the weather updates, as things can change quickly with Storm Eowyn approaching.
