Storm Darragh wreaked havoc in Briton Ferry, tearing off a rugby club’s roof and narrowly missing bystanders in a shocking incident
Briton Ferry: Over the weekend, Storm Darragh hit hard, and the Briton Ferry RFC clubhouse took a serious hit. The roof was ripped off, causing chaos and damage to nearby cars. With winds reaching 100mph, the Met Office’s red weather warning was spot on. It was a wild day across Wales, and every football and rugby match was called off.
Even though there was no game, some club members were hanging out in the clubhouse. Suddenly, while one guy was outside, chunks of the roof flew off and smashed into parked cars, setting off alarms everywhere.
Things got even scarier when another big piece of roofing came flying down, just missing a group of people. Club secretary Kerry Frey said it was a close call, and they were lucky no one got hurt.
The clubhouse was still open for a Christmas jumper day, and folks were expected to show up despite the storm. But around 3:30 PM, a loud roar shook the place as a large section of the roof blew off, heading straight for the road.
As people started to leave, they were right in the path of those flying roofing sheets. Kerry watched the video later and realized how dangerous it could have been.
He mentioned that they had live music planned, and if kids had been around, it could have turned into a disaster. Thankfully, everyone was okay, but it was a frightening experience.
The club is now working to clean up the mess left by the storm. Kerry is in touch with their insurers, hoping for good news about storm damage coverage. Luckily, the inside of the clubhouse is fine, but it’s closed for now. They’re hoping to get the roof fixed soon, but with so many repairs needed across the country, it might take a while.
