In the aftermath of Storm Darragh, nearly 58,000 homes in South Wales remain without power, with restoration efforts ongoing amid challenging conditions.
Cardiff: So, Storm Darragh really did a number on South Wales. Can you believe nearly 58,000 homes are still in the dark? It’s been over 24 hours since the storm hit, and folks are still waiting for their power to come back on.
Since Friday night, more than 370,000 homes lost power at some point. The National Grid reported that as of Sunday morning, 57,769 homes were still without electricity. Some people are being told they might not get their power back until Sunday night, which is just rough.
They’ve managed to restore power to a lot of homes, but the winds were crazy. We’re talking gusts of up to 93 mph in some areas! The Met Office even issued a yellow warning for wind, so it’s not over yet.
People in places like Coity and Morriston are feeling the pinch. One resident said they’ve been without power since early Saturday and were initially told it would be back on by Saturday night. Now, they’re looking at a much longer wait.
Roisin Quinn from the National Grid said the weather has made it tough for the engineers, but they’re working hard to fix things. They really appreciate everyone’s patience during this mess.
On top of all this, Dyfed-Powys Police declared a major incident due to the storm. They’re advising people to stay off the roads for safety. Cardiff Council has been busy too, responding to around 300 calls about fallen trees and other storm-related issues.
As Storm Darragh moves away, the winds are expected to stick around for a bit longer, causing more potential disruptions. So, if you’re in the area, hang in there and stay safe!
