Stockport: A £1m project is underway to restore the Stockport Viaduct, and it’s set to wrap up in March. But here’s the catch: the M60 will be closed for 13 nights during the work.

Network Rail kicked off the restoration last year. They’ve been busy clearing out overgrown plants, scrubbing off graffiti, and fixing up the viaduct’s 11 million bricks. So far, they’ve repaired 23 out of the 26 arches, but there’s still more to do.

From February 17 to March 2, engineers will be abseiling down the impressive 550-metre long, 34-metre tall structure to finish the job. The M60 will be closed between junctions 27 and 1, but only at night from 10pm to 6am.

Don’t worry, though! Network Rail is planning diversion routes and will have signs up to guide drivers during the closures. Built back in 1840, this viaduct is a vital link, carrying nearly 400 trains daily between the West Coast Main Line and Manchester Piccadilly.

At the end of 2023, there were some concerns about the viaduct’s condition. A planning application revealed that damage could affect its load-bearing capacity if not addressed. They found crumbling brickwork, which could pose safety risks to people and property below.

Council member Grace Baynham is thrilled about the improvements to this “iconic” landmark. She mentioned that with the ongoing £1 billion regeneration of the town center, it’s crucial for historical landmarks to look their best.

Stockport MP Navendu Mishra expressed his delight over the restoration, noting he had raised concerns in Parliament about the viaduct’s condition. He praised Network Rail for taking on this significant project, which will benefit everyone in Stockport.

Rob Stephens, Network Rail’s principal route engineer for the North West, emphasized that this work is essential for the viaduct’s future. He wants to minimize inconvenience during the nighttime closures while ensuring the structure remains safe and visually appealing.

Overall, this restoration is not just about looks; it’s about maintaining the viaduct’s integrity and ensuring smooth train operations. It’s a win-win for the community!
