London: Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave has opened up about feeling “nervous” about his upcoming performance on Dancing on Ice. He’s worried that his diabetes might make it tricky to navigate the ice.

At 62, he’s also dealing with a hand condition that could affect how he performs. It’s a big deal since he’s a five-time Olympic gold medalist, and he’s joining other celebs like comedian Josh Jones and Traitors contestant Mollie Pearce on the show.

Steve mentioned that he’s never had a chance to do something like this before because his schedule was always packed with training. Plus, this year marks the 40th anniversary of his Olympic win, which makes it even more special.

He shared that he recorded a segment for Chris Dean and Jayne Torvill’s anniversary, and jokingly said, “I suppose you’re going to try and get me on the show now,” and here he is!

Reflecting on his nerves, he said he’s been diabetic for nearly 30 years, so he doesn’t have the same feeling in his feet. That could make it tough to stay steady on the ice. He also has Dupuytren’s contracture, which means his fingers can’t lay flat. If he falls, getting back up might be a challenge.

Dupuytren’s contracture is when the fingers bend towards the palm, and while it’s not usually painful, it can worsen over time. Treatment isn’t always needed early on, but if it gets severe, a doctor might refer you to a specialist.

There are a few treatment options, including surgery to remove the affected tissue or using a needle to make small cuts in it. The exact cause of Dupuytren’s contracture is still a mystery, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

Dancing on Ice kicks off on Sunday, January 12, at 6:30 PM, live on ITV1, ITVX, STV, and STV Player. It should be an exciting season!
