Ambulance bays at hospitals are being misused, causing issues for emergency services and patient care in North Wales
Bangor: It’s a real hassle out there. Ambulance bays at hospitals are being taken over by cars every night. A worker from the ambulance service reached out to North Wales Live, saying it’s a total nightmare for the crews.
They often find cars blocking these bays, which, while not emergency ones, are still crucial for patient transfers. It’s just making things tougher for everyone involved.
One staff member shared a photo showing the mess at Ysbyty Gwynedd. But it’s not just there; similar issues are popping up at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Wrexham Maelor Hospital too.
When North Wales Live asked the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board about this, they acknowledged that misusing these spaces can really mess with healthcare operations. They’re urging everyone to stick to the parking rules.
The anonymous staff member said getting to the bays is a real struggle. They’ve complained to both Betsi and the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, but nothing seems to change. All they want is to ensure safe access for patients, which is becoming increasingly difficult.
It’s the same story every night, and now it’s spilling into the daytime too. They’re finding it harder to park near the entrances, and even getting to the ambulance bays is a challenge because of all the cars blocking the way.
Dr. Sree Andole from BCUHB emphasized that ambulance bays are meant solely for ambulances. These spaces are vital for patient safety and efficient service. Misusing them can really slow down healthcare operations.
He reminded everyone that we all share the responsibility to keep these areas clear for emergency vehicles. They’re working closely with the Welsh Ambulance Service to tackle these issues and prioritize access for ambulances.
Dr. Andole also encouraged staff and visitors to think about using other transport options when they can and to follow the parking guidelines, especially around emergency routes and dedicated ambulance parking.
WAST mentioned they’re letting the Betsi health board take the lead on this issue.
