A driver has been sentenced to seven and a half years for causing a fatal crash that killed a beloved couple in Argyll
Argyll: A speeding driver has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after a tragic crash that took the lives of a popular couple. George Murphy, 55, was driving recklessly when he tried to overtake three vehicles and a bus on the A85.
The couple, Martin and Josephine Cousland, were on their way to a hotel in Oban for a family holiday when their Audi was struck. Sadly, they didn’t survive the collision. Murphy, who had a history of traffic offenses, pleaded guilty to causing their deaths through dangerous driving.
In court, the judge described the Couslands as vibrant and well-loved, emphasizing how their loss has devastated their family. Their daughters lost both parents in an instant, which is just heartbreaking.
Murphy, from Thornliebank, was banned from driving for life. The crash happened near Glen Lochy, and it was a horrific scene. Josephine was driving with Martin as a passenger when they collided head-on with Murphy’s car.
Witnesses described the chaos, with other drivers rushing to help, but it was too late for the Couslands. Murphy’s own sons were also injured in the crash, which adds another layer of tragedy to this whole situation.
In court, it was revealed that Murphy is deeply affected by what happened, but his remorse doesn’t change the fact that two lives were lost. The judge reduced his sentence due to his guilty plea, but the Couslands’ daughters expressed that no punishment can bring their parents back.
They’ve called for changes in the law to better support families affected by such tragedies. Every day, they remember their loving parents, who were taken from them far too soon.
