Plans for a new development in Sutton include 281 flats and community spaces, replacing an old bingo hall and office block.
South London: A former bingo hall and office block may soon be gone. Developers want to replace it with two new tower blocks. These will have 281 flats and rooftop play areas for kids. The plans have been in the works for four years.
Sutton Council will meet next week to discuss the plans. They aim to demolish the old 1960s tower block and the Riva Bingo site. Many locals see the empty site as an eyesore. It sits right by the busy St Nicholas Way.
The new design includes 19 and 11-storey towers. There will be 281 built-to-rent flats, with 56 set aside as affordable housing. This includes options for London Living Rent and Discounted Market Rent.
On the ground floor, there will be co-working spaces, a residents’ lounge, and even a cinema. A communal garden with a play area for children will sit between the two towers. Each flat will also have private balconies.
Parking will be limited to encourage walking and cycling. There will be some spaces for disabled use and commercial needs. Access will be through the existing entry on St Nicholas Way.
This isn’t the first time these plans have been discussed. The developers first approached the council in 2018. Concerns were raised about public space and views of the nearby historic church.
Some local leaders worry about the impact on services like healthcare and schools. They question if the local NHS can handle more residents. However, officials believe there are enough resources available.
Residents have voiced concerns about overdevelopment in Sutton. They don’t want the town to resemble Croydon. The council previously approved plans for 970 flats at another site, sparking debate.
Despite earlier approvals, no work has started on the site yet. Delays have been due to design issues and landscaping. Now, council officers are satisfied with the revised plans.
To ease the loss of the bingo hall, the council suggests providing space in the new development. They also noted the nearby Rose Hill Mecca Bingo for local seniors.
The St Nicholas House was built in 1965 and has served various purposes over the years. The Planning Committee will decide on the new application next Thursday.
