Local MP urges government to reconsider planning changes affecting greenbelt land
Glastonbury: Sarah Dyke MP is sounding the alarm about new government plans that could let developers take over greenbelt land. She’s worried these changes will ignore local communities and their needs.
The government wants to build 1.5 million homes by the end of this Parliament. But this plan could let developers skip local council approvals, which is a big deal. It might even open up some of our beautiful countryside for development.
Dyke has always been a strong advocate for community-led development. She believes that when locals are involved in planning, it leads to better housing solutions that come with necessary infrastructure like schools and parks.
She pointed out the urgent need for affordable housing in Glastonbury and Somerton. Many locals are struggling to find homes they can afford, and the rental market is a mess. People are being pushed out of their own communities.
“We need more homes, but we have to do it right,” she said. “Letting developers do whatever they want is not the answer. We need to ensure they provide quality housing and the services that come with it.”
Dyke emphasized that local input is crucial. She believes that communities should decide how and where housing is built, ensuring it meets their needs without overwhelming local resources.
She also highlighted successful local projects where community involvement led to sustainable housing solutions. Dyke is calling on the government to rethink policies that take power away from local decision-makers and to invest in affordable housing where it’s truly needed.
