Cork: It’s been a week since those big freeze warnings hit southwest Ireland, and the snow is still causing a ruckus in North Cork. The Cork County Council and the Defence Forces are out there, working hard to clear the snow and ice from the worst-hit areas.

They’ve even brought in some external contractors to help out. These folks are busy clearing footpaths and making sure kids can safely get to school. Just today, the council shared some updates on their progress.

They’ve been cleaning footpaths in Ballydesmond and Boherbue, making sure the primary school there is accessible. Kanturk is also getting some love, with crews working on footpaths and schools. They’re really putting in the effort to make sure everyone can get around safely.

The council mentioned that they’re focused on clearing snow in the hardest-hit areas, making schools, services, and shops accessible. They’re getting a lot of support from the Defence Forces and other contractors, which is great to see.

This morning, the Severe Weather team met up again to figure out the next steps. They’re prioritizing access to essential services and schools as they continue to clear the snow this weekend.

But here’s the thing: the thaw is going to be slow in the worst areas, which means driving could be tricky. There’s still a lot of compacted snow and mounds on the roads, so motorists need to be careful.

They’re advising drivers to slow down, even in spots that seem clear, because the road surfaces might be damaged. It’s all about being cautious out there.

Just yesterday, crews were busy in Charleville, where the roads were pretty much impassable during the heavy snowfall last week. Soldiers from the 1 Brigade Artillery Regiment have been lending a hand, helping isolated communities get access.

And let’s not forget the volunteers and good Samaritans who’ve been stepping up, making sure hospital staff can get to work. Farmers have been clearing paths for families in North Cork, which is just heartwarming.

On a brighter note, after some foggy weather last night, Met Éireann is predicting milder days ahead, with temperatures hitting around 13C in Munster by Monday. Fingers crossed for a smooth thaw!
